The opening of the Västergötland section of the Göta Canal was solemnly celebrated in 1822 in the presence of canal engineer Baltzar von Platen and the King Carl XIV Johan. When the entire canal was finally completed and it was possible to sail from Sjötorp to Mem, 1832, von Platen wasn´t there to celebrate. He had passed away, 1829, 63 years old. To his honour and memory a grand grave was built right next to the canal in Motala.
