Imagine a celebration like Christmas, but in high summer. Midsummer’s Eve, on 20 June, is a day to rejoice in the season’s plentiful sunshine, long evenings and short nights – and let your hair down with a great party!
This year the Midsummer’s Eve national holiday falls on Friday 20 June and Midsummer will be celebrated all over that weekend, with Midsummer’s Day on Sunday 22 June. Most Swedes take to the countryside for public and private parties and this is a time when traditions feature strongly. Across the country Midsummer Poles are dressed with fresh leaves and flowers for both children and adults to dance around. Girls bind wild flowers in their hair, songs are sung, schnapps is poured generously and everyone tucks into traditional Midsummer feasts.
